Did you know...

Co-generation power generation units are much more efficient than normal power plants, because they reuse the 'waste' heat given off during power generation to generate thermal energy too.

Compared with conventional plants, co-generation units can cut power and heating costs by as much as 40%.

New technology is being looked at that will make these units small enough to power private homes.

If this technology becomes widely established and can be efficiently hooked up to the power grid, the potential to reduce emissions is high and fuel consumption could be reduced by as much as 20% to 30%.

Companies in the lead market for environmentally friendly power generation are all pursuing the same three goals:

Reduce carbon dioxide emissions

Scale back dependency on fossil fuels

Make power generation more sustainable

There are five (5) areas of technology under this lead market:

Efficient power plant technologies such as gas and steam power plants, coal-fired power plants with reduced CO2 emissions and co-generation plants that combine the generation of heat and power

Technologies to reduce the emission of air pollutants during energy generation, such as flue gas cleaning plants

Renewable energy such as hydro power, solar thermal energy, photovoltaics, wind energy, geothermal energy, and biogas and biomass plants

Energy storage technologies such as compressed air, magnetic, geothermal and hydrogen storage systems

Hydrogen technologies and full cell application.

Synthetic fuels - Whole plants in the tank

According to GreenTech made in Germany,

"Biomass-to-liquid (BTL) fuels and bioethanol created by the enzymatic decomposition of cellulose are second-generation biofuels.

Unlike their first-generation predecessors (such as biodiesel, vegetable oils and bioethanol produced by traditional means), these new fuels can be extracted not only from agricultural produce but also from biological waste.

The energy yield per unit of space is twice as high in the second generation.

Net CO2 emissions are also far lower than in first-generation biofuels.

In addition, synthetic biofuels reduce particulate emissions even in older vehicles and without the need for technical modifications."

Global demand for energy will soar by more than 50% to 17 gigatons of oil equivalents
Global oil production will also increase by 40%
Global coal production will rise by 30%
Fossil fuels will cover 80% of energy requirements

The challenge is therefore to make power generation more sustainable - and to do so worldwide.

We must move away from nuclear power and fossil fuels toward renewable energies and greater energy efficiency.

This structural change is the key to a sustainable, inexpensive and secure energy supply in the future.
